27/52: Two to One

July 12, 2014

Alice and I wrote a song for Elliot’s first birthday. It’s the second song we’ve written together. Our process goes a little something like this:

  1. We brainstorm about particular ideas. The first song was about Sabbath, so we talked about all the things we liked. On this one, I asked her what thoughts she had about Elliot and his first birthday. She had a lot of sweet things to say.
  2. After that, I try to come up with a tune. On the first song, Alice actually came up with the hook on her own. This melody didn’t work quite as well for that.
  3. Finally, we use the words from our list to match the tune. Sometimes we will alternate lines. This was a little easier with the first song, so I was a bit more hands-on with this one. So if it strikes you poorly, it probably isn’t the four-year-old’s fault.

Verse 1:

Elliot I love you, son,

Can’t believe you’re turning wonder

Up inside your daddy’s heart

With candle eyes reflecting sparks

Verse 2:

Elliot, I love you,

Precious baby brother,

So excited for this day,

I love you in every way

Verse 3:

Elliot we love you,

Treasured son and brother,

Soon you will be turning to

First steps to take and words to choose
